Swansea is a beautifully situated coastal city (and county) in Wales. It is second only to Cardiff in the size of population and benefits greatly from the sandy bay in which is sits. With the sea and sandy west coast of Wales to one side and glorious countryside all about Swansea is a superb place in which to base yourself for a vacation in Wales.

Being on the coast the city benefits from a climate which is generally milder than the inland mountains and valleys and temperatures have been recorded, during the summer, of over 30°C. During hot periods the beaches along the coast become rather crowded but it is still possible to find secluded areas if you are willing to search them out.

Although the beaches of Caswell, Langland and Limeslade are popular with tourists for swimming, sunbathing and other leisurely pursuits, Swansea Bay is most popular with those who wish to enjoy the thrills of watersports. Popular watersports include sailing, water skiing, surfing and wind surfing and others, with the jetski appearing every once in a while. Other sports popular with visitors include walking and cycling with both catered for admirably.

For the walker Swansea is a paradise with a splendid five mile coastline with superb coastal paths. For the cyclist and mountain biker both the coast and inland area provide excellent ground and an excellent dedicated cycle route, called the Celtic Trail, crosses west and south Wales and is easily accessible from Swansea. The route takes in many popular tourist spots including the fantastic Pembrey Country Park (Millennium Coastal Path).

Of course many folk choose to visit Swansea to enjoy the absolutely amazing beaches of the Gower peninsula. This spectacular part of Wales was the first place in the UK, way back in 1956, to be declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beaches such as Three Cliffs Bay often feature in "Top Ten" lists of the most beautiful places in Britain and, from the picture on the left, you can see that this is for good reason. However this part of Swansea (county) has other superb beaches which include Rhossili Beach, Oxwich Bay, Burry Holms beach and many more.

While the Gower peninsula mainly for it's coastline of sandy beaches and numerous caves many folk overlook the wonderful countryside. The Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers about 188 km² and includes many small villages many of which are worth a visit.
