Acid Reflux Diet Tips

Acid reflux, and the management of, can be greatly improved by the simple approach of a change in diet. It doesn't really matter to which type of acid reflux you suffer fromor what the underlying factors are you will find a change of diet helps you in your struggle with heartburn.

Sadly it is well known that s ome foods seem to cause heartburn in many people. The categories of food vary but, in general you should avoid foods that are spicy, high fat and dairy foods. Also it has been known, in some people, that chocolate, tomatoes and various herbal supplements tend to bring on symptoms similar to those found in heartburn. This is particularly the case if these are taken only shortly before bedtime.

If you know of any particular foods that seem to effect your heartburn, you may find that the symptoms of heartburn can be avoided by eating them in the morning instead of closer to bedtime. If you eat these foods during the time of day when you are active the body is better equiped to digest the foods that we eat by the use of the stomach acids.

Heartburn is, primarily, a night time problem but relief can be found by raising the level of the head of their bed. It should be noted that adding more layers of pillows doesn't have the same effect. You really need to raise the entire head end of a bed by about twelve inches if you want to ensure that you lessen your heartburn symptoms.

If you find that you are still are suffering from acid reflux and that the change of diet does not really help, you should seriously consider a visit to your family doctor. It is really important that you rule out the possibility of anything serious such as a structural abnormality, your doctor will determine which factors are contributing to your acid reflux symptoms and help in their treatment.

If your doctor finds that the best treatment for your heartburn/acid reflux isprescription medicine it is still an excellent idea to try and eliminate foods that aggravate your heartburn. Most doctors now send you to see a dietician who will advise much of the above and tell you which foods to avoid and guide you towards a an overall improvement in your diet.
