Air Force Travel – Seeing the World
By Charlie Cunningham
If you are enlisted in the United States Air Force, you will have the opportunity to travel to many places around the world. For many people this is the main attraction to military service. Air Force travel can be a fun and exciting career while on the job and off. If you are enlisted in the Air Force, you are entitled to 30 days of paid vacation and you are entitled to travel on Air Force aircraft to just about any destination you would like. You will also have the opportunity to fly your family members over for a visit should you be stationed internationally.
In times past it was more difficult to obtain travel vouchers due to the high demand and red tape. The internet has simplified the process by processing the information needed much more quickly than how it was done previously usually through manual data keeping. Often Air Force travel plans get changed due to a change in orders. This presented a ton of paperwork that took hours to complete at a high cost to the government. The internet now processes this paperwork in a matter of minutes which saves not only time, but also additional personnel.
Post 9/11 Difficulties
Since 9/11 there have been many additional rules and regulations regarding Air Force travel as well as civilian travel. The Space A flight program provides enlisted service members and their families the opportunity to fly on certain aircraft if there is seating availability. Since 9/11 this system has been harder to access because the available flights are no longer made public. But if you happen to be flexible enough then you can travel with some fantastic discounts.
The Space A flight program requires you to be present for a roll call prior to departure. Enlisted personnel will be given priority based on military rank or status. The higher your military rank is; the greater your chances of getting an available seat. Family members of enlisted personnel are also eligible for flight seating. It is important that enlisted personnel and their families are ready to travel at the time of roll call or you may lose your travel privilege.
Air Force travel is one of the many benefits that are offered to enlisted military personnel. With a generous paid vacation package there will be ample opportunity to visit exotic places and discover new sites that would not be possible otherwise. Most private civilian employment will only offer a 10 day paid vacation and the civilian is responsible for all of the travel expenses. Air Force travel provides for deeply discounted rates as well as the time to enjoy your ultimate destination.
