Air Travel Regulations – Staying Safe
By Charlie Cunningham
Since 9/11 air travel has become more difficult because of the restrictions placed on items you are allowed to carry on to the plane. Since that time we have all seen strict air travel regulations which often seem unreasonable.
Liquid Limits
If you wish to carry liquids in a carry-on bag you will have to meet certain criteria for them to be allowed. Liquids, gels, and aerosols must all be in a container which is no bigger than three ounces. This includes make-up, toothpaste, shampoo, hairspray, and even liquid soap. Containers that are bigger than three ounces but are only half full will not be allowed in your carry-on either. All of these three ounce containers must fit into a clear, quart size bag that contains a zipper top. No other size or style bag will be allowed.
It is important to remember that these air travel regulations are designed to keep everybody safe. These regulations are the result of extensive research and testing to determine their safety factor. These regulations usually only apply to carry-on baggage and not baggage that is checked in through security. Baggage that is checked in and will be stored in the cargo hold is not subject to the strict guidelines of carry-on luggage.
The regulatory commission recognizes the need for certain items such as baby formula and prescription medications. If you require these necessary items it is important for you to have these items separate from your other carry-on items and you must inform the airline authorities of their presence and their need. Solid cosmetics such as lipstick and lip balms are permitted with no problem.
Arriving on Time
With the new air travel regulations which are now in place, it is important for you to arrive early enough to get everything checked through security. If you are late and are not get checked in on time there is a good chance you will forfeit your reservations. Airline travel will not be interrupted because of your inability to arrive in a timely manner.
Items Not Allowed
There are certain items that are not allowed on the plane and will not be checked through security. Explosives such as blasting caps, fireworks, dynamite, and hand grenades are all considered to be too dangerous for air travel. If you have realistic looking explosives that are imitations, air travel regulations will not allow them on the plane.
Other items which are prohibited by air travel regulations are flammable items such as gasoline, cooking fuels, gas torches, and lighter fluid. No lighters will be allowed as carry-ons and only lighters which adhere to DOT exemptions will be allowed in the cargo area. All disabling chemicals such as bleach, chlorine, tear gas, and spray paint are strictly forbidden.
If you are planning on traveling by air it is your responsibility to comply with the air travel regulations which are put in place for everybody's safety. If you are in doubt about an item you can contact the airline carrier prior to your trip date to find out how it is to be handled.
