Having a Cold and Taking Care of Baby Is a Significant Challenge
By Mary Simmons

Parents with new babies often suffer from lack of sleep because their new baby needs to be cared for all day and through the night. The task of caring for a baby is probably one of the most difficult. The parents often get worn down because of the strain that the new responsibility puts on their shoulders. Having a cold and taking care of a baby taxes all of the systems of the body. A cold adds to the fatigue of any normal person, but a mother or father having a cold and taking care of baby is a real strain. There is no other situation where having a cold is so difficult.

Having a cold and taking care of baby is difficult for any new mother, but a mother who is breastfeeding has an added burden. This mother must be very careful about taking any medication that might be passed on to the small child. The first impulse is to take some type of cold medication when the sniffles first hit. The ingredients of that cold medicine should be scrutinized carefully when breastfeeding. A mother might first turn to medicine that she has used for many years when a cold strikes, but when breast feeding this mother needs to check again.

A Mother Troubled by Having a Cold and Taking Care of Baby Might Need Help

Having a cold and taking care of baby could be very stressful, and the best course of action is to avoid any type of illness in the first place. A new mother and father can easily get worn out, and they should try to work together as much as possible to avoid this situation. If either parent cannot help care for the baby, the other parent has to take over the care of the child. This can be disastrous if it wears down the parent that remains well. This parent may not stay well for long.

New parents need help from time to time, and they should not be ashamed to ask for help. Most will find out that other family members and friends enjoy helping out with a new baby. If friends and family step in when a parent ends up having a cold and taking care of a baby, this will give the parent a chance to recuperate fully. The parent might even recuperate much more quickly because they get some needed sleep when the relief shows up.
