Understanding Chronic Back Pain
By M. A. Fulmar
When you experience back pain from injuries, most people recover within several weeks. Although painkillers and other prescribed drugs give your back relief, there is still a possibility of back pains to occur. Unfortunately, for some people, back pain never goes away.
When your back pain lasts about three months or more, experts consider your condition as chronic back pain. This condition is usually caused by more serious health problems such as osteoporosis or arthritis and severe injury.
Unlike other problems in the back, chronic back pain can be a much aggravating condition because it is much harder to treat. This is because chronic back pain can be caused by severe injury or by a degenerative condition, which cannot be reversed. For this reason, treatment of chronic back pain is usually aimed in reducing pain, keeping the patient mobile and comfortable as possible.
For some cases, surgery can be an option. However, the success rate of these spinal surgeries is very unpredictable. Therefore, they are only performed on prudently chosen cases of chronic back pain. So if you have chronic back pain, which medical experts do not consider harmful, you can stick to conservative treatments such as engaging in activities, resting, physiotherapy and pain relievers.
Chronic Back Pain Prevention
When a person had had a back injury, the chances of chronic pack pain recurrence increases. However, you can prevent these painful episodes by taking precautions and changing a couple of things from your lifestyle.
Regular exercise can improve your posture while increasing muscle support from the spine. When you do this, you automatically lose weight. Meaning, the lesser weight you carry, the less stress it gives your back injury.
When you are diagnosed with chronic back pain, you should be extra careful on stressing your back. Make sure that you lift or carry heavy loads properly and carefully. Generally, the correct way of carrying or lifting things is by picking up the item, squatting down, holding the object closer to your body and lifting using the legs while keeping the back straight.
Chronic back pain can also be prevented by following proper posture. When sitting down, remember not to slouch and always keep your back upright.
Certain medications for chronic back pain can relieve painful episodes of back pain. However, prevention and changing bad habits could help by naturally allowing your body to heal by itself.
