Buying Backpacking Food Before You Go
By Andy Anderson
When you are traveling, no matter where you are going, you know that food can be expensive. Whether you are trying to buy food in local stores to cook on your own, or whether you are trying to eat at restaurants every night, you know that you are going to be wracking up a huge bill before you get home. Unlike souvenirs or other things you are spending money on as you are backpacking, buying backpacking food before you go is something that is doable and something that can easily save you money.
Seek Out Deals
Before you leave on your trip, seek out deals at the place you usually buy food. You want to buy lots of things like rice and pasta, things that you can cook with only water wherever you go. You can also buy a few cans of veggies, but remember that these are heavy and hard to transport.
The biggest backpacking food item that people often spend money on as they travel is snack food. You can find lots of backpacking food that can act as snacks, and this is the best way to make sure that you are saving money. You should be buying lots of things that are small and compact, like granola bars, that you can put in your backpack. There are going to be many times on your trip that you will be hungry and might be tempted to stop in somewhere and buy a candy bar or something else to crave your hunger. However, if you do this you are going to spend a lot of money. If you have something on you already, backpacking food that you can just grab and eat, you are going to save money in the long run. You should be also having breakfast backpacking food that is bars or other items because if you are able to feed yourself for the morning and the afternoon, you can justify buying a big dinner somewhere and spending that money on it.
No matter what type of backpacking you are doing, the backpacking food requirements are going to be close to the same. You want to buy things that are small and compact and wont' take up a lot of room. You also want to buy things that fit nicely into your pocket, so that you can always have something with you. However, you always want to buy things that are going to be healthy, because you never know when you are going to need that extra energy that comes from eating healthy food on the go.
