Beauty: True Beauty Is...
By Linda Rogers

Beauty and what is truly beautiful is a matter of great concern for the vast majority of people. At times it would appear that the beauty business, medical aesthetics, cosmetics etc. seem to work in hand with the media. Enormous increasing pressures are laid upon teenagers and especially young women. Even the old are often found to be under pressure to purchase the latest beauty product.

In the following article we will look at what beauty is and how this effects our lives. The emphasis will be upon the beauty industry.

What is "Beauty"

Wikipedia (the free online encyclopedia) defines beauty as "a quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind"

To me this seems a little "intense" as I would much rather say that beauty is something which we find appealing. This simplified phrase helps cover for those things which are generally considered ugly but many consider beautiful. A contradiction? Not really it merely shows the diversity of opinion over what is actually beautiful. Another way to look at this problem is when we look at personal relationships and how we view beauty in relation to the appearance of people. One person would honestly say that his partner was the most beautiful person in the world while another would say theirs is!

The complexities of beauty and personal preference, and our understanding of such, has always been a matter of great debate. The importance of the subject can easily be shown by the amount of money spent each year on beauty products and services. These range from skin care products which claim to produce perfect skin, to the latest lipstick which is claimed makes the lips look fuller and more appealing.

We are really fussy people, we even look to the most minor points of the human body and develop opinions as to their beauty or lack of it. Even our hair is a matter of great concern. It simply is not good enough to have is well groomed but it needs to look shiny and healthy, oh, and of course, there is always the latest hair care product that will furnish you with the best ever looking hair that has rested upon your head.

OK so I am being a little cynical here as we all like to look our best and there are some beauty products that work well. I am merely trying to show my dislike of the way in which the media continually attempts to shape the public conception of beauty. The continual use of seriously underweight models both in print and on the catwalk has, in my opinion, led to a serious problem amongst younger women with an ongoing increase in eating disorders. I find beauty in differences whereas, it appears to me, that the media find beauty too complicated and try to simplify it far too much.

The world of medical aesthetics as benefited greatly from this apparent fanaticism for the body beautiful. It would appear that we are no longer happy with that with which we are born so we set about changing it in the name of beauty. A little shaved off here and a little addition here, implants for the buttocks, chest, chin etc. Whatever happened to natural beauty? I fully understand the need for some people to have reconstructive surgery and even cosmetic surgery but I do feel that far too many people are now taking it just that little bit too far.

Why not make the most of the beauty that we were born with before we start messing with nature? There are plenty of products and services available that will enhance this beauty so why not use them? Well, maybe most of us do but do we truly understand the effects of them, their benefits, their dangers, or are we just following the latest fashion?

I hope that the articles below go some way to help you understand the world of beauty, the products and services that are currently available etc. However, if you have a problem that should require medical attention we strongly advise that you visit your doctor rather than rely upon online articles or beauty tips sites.
