Staying at a Bed and Breakfast in Hannibal, Missouri
By Charlotte Pennington
Visiting Hannibal, Missouri, the hometown of American writer Mark Twain (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper) is a unique experience. In many ways, Hannibal seems to be frozen in time. Many of the buildings and streets have been preserved exactly as Mark Twain (known then as Samuel Clemens) would have remembered them.
Even the voices of some of Twain's childhood friends have been preserved in electronic format. Because Hannibal is a small town and mainly draws tourists looking to re-experience the formative years of one of America's most famous writers, large hotels are not available. Hannibal Missouri does, however, offer many bed and breakfast inns. Staying in a Hannibal, Missouri bed and breakfast is perhaps the best way to experience the town.
Some of the more notable Hannibal, Missouri bed and breakfasts include:
Reagan's Queen Anne - 1-888-221-1251
Reagan's Queen Anne is a towering Victorian house built in the early 1890's. The rooms are decorated with antiques and heirlooms and featherbeds with pressed linens make for a peaceful night's sleep. Breakfast includes fresh-baked muffins along with entrees that vary from Italian Crustless Quiche to Maple Sausage Patties.
This Missouri bed and breakfast is located within walking distance of downtown where tourists can find shopping, museums devoted to Mark Twain, walking tours, and trolley tours. The famous Mark Twain cave is less than a five minute drive away.
Heaven Sent Bed and Breakfast - 1-573-221-0445
Built between 1858 and 1864, Heaven Sent Bed and Breakfast is located on so-called millionaire's row and was once home to John and Helen Garth, lifelong friends of Mark Twain. Today, guests come to see the Italian villa style architecture. The main guest room, known as the Lighthouse Cupola Suite, provides a lovely view of downtown and the mighty Mississippi river. As the name may suggest, this Missouri bed and breakfast is very Christian and family friendly.
Hannibal B&B at Rockcliffe Mansion - 1-877-423-4140
When Mark Twain made his last trip home to Hannibal, he spoke to a crowd gathered at Rockcliffe Mansion. Advised to keep his speech short due to the warm weather, Twain spoke for almost two h ours - and not a single person left before he was finished. Today, you, too, can see the elegant steps where Twain delivered his last speech to his townspeople.
Most guest rooms offer four-poster beds and period furniture and décor. Cheese and wine are available at check-in, room service is available throughout the day, and nightly turndown service with chocolates makes a nice bedtime ritual. Rockcliffe Mansion hosts several events and tours including a cemetery/ghost tour, periodic mystery nights, ballroom dancing, and Holiday Victorian Teas. If you want to get married in Hannibal, Rockcliffe Mansion also hosts weddings, though the prices are not cheap.
Hannibal, Missouri offers several unique bed and breakfast inns to tourists who come to feel closer to Mark Twain. If you're planning a trip to Hannibal, why not stay at one of Missouri's finest bed and breakfasts?
