Savannah Bed and Breakfast Haunted Tours
By Charlotte Pennington

The city of Savannah, Georgia is the state's first city. As the 13th and final colony in America, Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe and has a rich and tragic history. Savannah became the major port for slavery and slaves were shipped there by the millions. In 1819, the S.S. Savannah, the first steam powered vessel to cross the Atlantic Ocean, made Savannah its home port. In 1796 and 1820 two fires left most of Savannah in ashes but the city was rebuilt quickly. There were outbreaks of yellow fever, the first in 1820 that killed one tenth of the population of Savannah.

Savannah was a major battleground during the American Revolution and General William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union Army captured Savannah during the Civil War.
