Astronomy Binoculars: A Viable Alternative to Telescopes
By Tony Cunningham
Any pair of binoculars will divulge a wealth of detail that is invisible to the naked eye but, higher powered 7x50 or 10x50 astronomy binoculars will serve one well and, make the astronomical observations that much more interesting. If one chooses to go in for larger binoculars, the need to also have a tripod would arise and, thus add to the cost. One can choose from among many different sized and magnification-capable astronomy binoculars but, need to consider a few salient points before selecting a particular pair.
One would need to check how soundly has the binocular been made and, may prefer to purchase lighter binoculars rather than heavier ones.
Another factor that may decide one against a particular pair would be its quick-focus capabilities that make focusing difficult and, zoom binoculars are not known to give images of high quality, as compared to normal binoculars. The astronomy binocular should also not be fixed focus and, one should also not choose those high magnification chain-store binoculars touted as good for astronomy as they do not give bright images and, are also difficult to hold steadily.
Things to Consider
Before buying astronomy binocular, hold it at an arms length to ensure that the circles of light are truly circular and, if you notice flat edges, you can be sure they are made of undersized prisms that will not let the entire light pass to the viewer's eyes. It is also advisable to take it outside and view distant objects to ensure there are no distracting colored fringes or blurry images. Also, choose a multicoated astronomy binocular whenever possible.
Choosing an astronomy binocular in preference to a telescope is not such a bad idea after all, as they are highly versatile and will reveal craters on the Moon as well orbiting moons around Jupiter and, a lot more. In fact, one can spot Milky Way starfields as well as other galaxies with the help of an astronomy binocular. Other advantages of using astronomy binoculars include a wide angle of view as well as right-side-up images that enables one to easily find objects. Also, there is no great expertise required in using an astronomy binocular and, one can sling them around the neck, walk outside and start stargazing.
For those who do not have a big budget for their astronomical adventures, the astronomy binocular provides a viable alternative at affordable prices. Some good brand names making astronomy binoculars include Fujinon, Miyauchi and Oberwerk and, one may expect to pay fewer than two hundred dollars or upwards of a thousand dollars for a pair; so, there is one for every budget and need.
