Botox/Botulinum Toxin
Botox/Botulinum Toxin is, alarmingly, one of the most poisonous substances that naturally occur in the world. You will be pleased to know that the amounts used in cosmetic botox treatments are so small that they are considered safe.
The use of botox in cosmetics has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Despite many scare stories, and general bad press, the treatment continues to be used on an increasingly regular basis by many. Though many criticize the effects of the botox treatment the patients most often are very pleased with the results.
Botox In More Detail
Botox is actually the commercial brand name which is now used generically to describe the neurotoxic protein Botulinum Toxin. This protein is produced by the bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum and, as mentioned, is extremely poisonous. Other brand names include the popular Dysport brand which is now widely used.
The first successful medical usage of botox was in 1980 when it was used in the treatment of lazy eye (Strabismus) but it was only approved for use, by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 1989 and only for those patients over the age of 12 and for the treatment of Strabismus, blepharospasm and memifacial spasm.
It was as early as the 1950's that it had been discovered that botox, when injected, decreased muscle activity. It was found that the muscle was unable to contract for a period of between four and six months. It is this effect that is sought when it is used as a cosmetic procedure.
By injecting the botox into key areas around the face it stops those muscles from contracting and therefore greatly reduces the appearance of wrinkles. It must be stressed that it does not, actually, remove the wrinkles permanently as they begin to reappear as the effects of the botox begin to fade.
The way in which botox is able to achieve these results is rather simple to demonstrate. Sit yourself down in front of a mirror and, while looking carefully at your face, smile. You will notice that lines appear at each side of the mouth and some deep lines/wrinkles appear around the eyes and upon the forehead. Now take a deep breathe and puff up your cheeks as though holding a large mouthful of water. You will notice that there are no wrinkles. There you have it an instant pre botox and post botox face, a before and after shot if you like? Botox stops those muscles on the face that cause the appearance of temporary wrinkles and laughter lines from contracting and effectively freezing them.
Though botox has the effect of stopping the appearance of wrinkles there are cases where the patient has had far too many botox injections and such cases result in a face that is void of any expression. For this reason many criticize botox however, used well, the results can be spectacular.
