Cat Litter Management
By Emily Sanchez

Unless you live in a place where you can allow your cat free access to the outdoors, caring for a cat properly means that you will have to use cat litter. Management of kitty litter is not a pleasant job, but, for the sake of your cat's comfort and hygiene, somebody has to do it.

Your pet is highly particular and very fussy about cleanliness so the proper management of cat litter can vastly reduce those little accidents that happen outside of the litter box. It will also lead to a pretty drastic reduction of the cat odors in the house. There are a few simple things which can be done to ensure that you are managing your cat litter properly.

Odors

It is scientific fact that cats have noses that are far more sensitive that those of humans and their perception of smell is similar to our own. It is therefore understandable why cats detest a smelly, stinking cat litter box just as much, if not more than, us. It is for this reason that it is important to ensure that the litter tray is inspected at least once a day, cleaning it if required. The smells from the litter tray come from the ammonia and odor-causing bacteria, so, by cleaning the cat litter and replacing it completely once a month, it is possible to have complete control over the stink. Furthermore, while changing the litter, the box should be disinfected thoroughly, it doesn't matter which type of cat litter you use in the litter box it MUST be disinfected regularly.

Another good tip to remember when shopping for cat litter is to avoid purchasing litters which have been scented. You will find that they rarely do a good job and almost fail completely in covering up the smells. The use of scented materials in the litter box may actually discourage your poor cat from using his/her box.

Proper Disposal

When disposing cat litter take great care to do it properly as this will help cut down on odors. Please remember that you should never, under any circumstances, dispose of cat litter down the toilet. This is especially important if you use a brand which clumps together, these clumping litters, once flushed, will swell in size and eventually lead to the clogging of your system. Even brands which claim that they can be flushed should be disposed of in a different manner, if only to play it safe.

Now that you understand that flushing cat litter down the toilet is not an advisable option you will be left with only one other - that is your garbage can! However, if you just get rid of it the same way you do with other trash it is highly likely that your house will soon smell terrible. Once your house suffers from bad cat odors it is very difficult to remove them so you should remove the cat litter from the house completely when cleaning or changing it.Some people find that the best way to cut down on the smells is to use a completely separate trash can for litter.

Plastic bags are, possibly, the best way in which to dispose of the waste, you should seal the bag and then place it into another, paper, bag to ensure that no smells escape. You can then simply stick it in the trash can. You can also place a freshener into the can to further protect the family from catty smells.

However there are some other things which you can do to keep smells to a minimum. You could purchase a special litter disposal system, which are readily available in most pet stores, these systems consist of a well sealed trash can with special filters for trapping the odors. Whichever method of disposal you choose either the simple or the more sophisticated methods, disposing of used cat litter properly will help keep your home free from that cat smell which we all hate.
