The Rise Of Child Obesity In America
By Linda Rogers

Obesity has been a significant health issue for several years. Most chronic adult health problems are only compounded by obesity. Weight loss programs have become innumerable in American society, and workout gyms are available in almost every town in the nation.

Even with all these measures in place, obesity has increased and is now not only affecting the adult population but it's spreading to our children, as well.. The rise of child obesity in America has become a major health concern.

It has been reported by health officials that even children as young as toddlers are beginning to show weight problems. The main concern with child obesity in America is the future health problems these overweight children will face.

Health Complications Related To Child Obesity In America

One of the major impacts on health in obese children is their increased risk for diabetes. Until recently, children who were diagnosed with diabetes had it due to their inability to produce the insulin needed by their bodies. This was referred to as juvenile onset diabetes.

Now, young children are being diagnosed with what was formerly considered adult onset diabetes where the body is unable to produce enough insulin in relationship to the body size and diet consumed. Diabetes is a serious health issue on its own, but also has many complications which are life threatening.

Included in these complications are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney failure, as well as an increased risk of stroke and heart attacks. Health problems which used to be reserved for the elderly are now becoming childhood illnesses. Child obesity in America is causing lifelong health issues.

The Economic Cost Of Child Obesity In America

Children who are obese and develop complications due to that obesity will require extensive medical care for their entire life. As they age, the severity of their health issues can cause their education to be affected due to missed school, lack of concentration and decreased ability to learn.

This, in turn, will affect the ability for these children to be employable as they reach adulthood. Between the major medical costs that obesity incurs, and the probable need for these people to be cared for by society, the expense becomes astronomical.

The nation as a whole needs to recognize that child obesity in America will become a major depletion to our country. Americans need to get involved in finding appropriate solutions for the children who are facing this issue.

The first thing that adults need to do is face up to their own failings in weight control. Adults providing good examples of healthy lifestyles can be the best way for children to learn.
