Fighting the Battle of Obesity: Health Issues of Obese Children
By Linda Rogers
Obesity has become a big problem in the youth of this country, with as many as one in five children falling into the category of obesity. There are even more kids that can be considered overweight, which greatly increases the odds of becoming obese as the child gets older. There are many health issues of obese children, which is why health care professionals, educators and parents are becoming so concerned with this trend. Some of these health issues in obese children can be quite serious, and some are even life threatening. This is why it is so important to nip the obesity problem in the bud, by preventing as many cases as possible before they even get to the more challenging treatment stage. This prevention plan includes dietary changes as well as behavior modification and an increase in physical activity.
Diabetes in the Kids
Type 2 diabetes has become a growing problem in this nation among children and teens. Until recent years, this disease was only seen in adults, and was even known as adult-onset diabetes. Now this potentially serious illness is being seen in more and more children, and the children that are being diagnosed with it are primarily overweight or obese. Type 2 diabetes can cause problems later in life that affect the eyes, kidneys, circulatory system, and the body's ability to fight infection. The fact that so many kids are being diagnosed with this disease early in life is a frightening trend indeed. The good news is that by losing weight, a child can go a long way in controlling the effects of this illness. The bad news is that losing weight is much more challenging than not gaining it in the first place.
Other Health Issues of Obese Children
As a result of the increase in obesity in children, doctors are also seeing more and more kids with cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. These are other health issues that were rarely seen in children until the incidence of obesity became so much higher. Another serious health issue for obese children is sleep apnea, which is defined as breathing interruptions during sleep. This health issue in obese children primarily can affect memory and ability to learn. Some of these health issues may not arise in children, but can be diagnosed in adulthood if the problem of obesity is never addressed. The bottom line is that there are many health issues in obese children that can be very serious and even life threatening. This makes obesity in children a grave concern for health care professionals, educators and parents.
