Obesity and Children: An Alarming Issue
By Linda Rogers
Obesity and children has been the growing concern among parents, pediatricians and other health care providers because more and more children are becoming overweight and on their way to obesity at an early age. As a result, health problems that adults usually suffer from – such as hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol – are now being diagnosed to children.
Although obesity and children was a rare issue twenty years ago, it is now one of the most alarming health problems in the U.S. and other countries. Over 10% children are known to be obese worldwide and this number is expected to increase in the following years. Because of this, many doctors are finding ways to overcome this health problem before it's too late.
Compared to “baby fat”, obesity and children is a serious issue because it has a large effect on a child's physical, emotional and social life. Not only does obesity increase a child's risk of heart disease, stroke and various health conditions, it also creates emotional and social problems, such as depression, eating disorders and other serious conditions.
Obesity and Children: Helping your Child Fight Obesity
The good thing about obesity and children is that it parents can prevent this from happening. Just like adults, before one becomes obese, he or she first becomes overweight. As parents, they should be able to look after their children's health and determine if their child has weight problems.
When your child is overweight, your can help him or her keep a healthy weight by several effective methods. While your child is still an infant, you can delay giving your child solid foods by continuing breastfeeding. During his or her early childhood, you should provide your child with healthy and low-fat meals, snacks and drinks while teaching them to engage in regular physical activities.
For adolescents, teach your child to eat healthy and nutritious foods. Spend some time with your child by jogging, playing tennis or other activities that your child enjoys. You should also limit their time watching television or sitting in front of the computer because this will encourage bad habits.
Obesity and children is a serious issue. However, it is the parents' responsibility to prevent this from happening to their child. By teaching your child the proper way of eating and educating them about nutritional values, you can give your child a healthier life without the risks of heart problems and other health conditions.
