Hershey's Chocolate: A Popular Chocolate Brand
By Joanne Fletcher
Since chocolate is such a popular snack, it is no wonder that there are many different brands of chocolate, each with a distinctive taste. However, the Hershey's chocolate brand is among the most deliciously popular brands of chocolate today.
The History of Hershey's Chocolate
Those who are fans of Hershey's chocolate brand would find that the history of Hershey's chocolate is an interesting one. The Hershey Company is the largest chocolate company in America. The Hershey Company is also one of the oldest chocolate companies in America. It was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894, under the original name of the Hershey Chocolate Company.
Milton Hershey had not found immediate success in the candy world, however. In 1876, after he had completed a confectioner's apprenticeship, Hershey tried opening a candy shop in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the candy shop only lasted for about 6 years.
Not to be deterred, Hershey went to New York to manufacture candy, but was again unsuccessful. He then moved back home to Pennsylvania, where he started the Lancaster Caramel Company, which used fresh milk in the making of its caramel products.
This company proved to be successful, so successful in fact, that in 1900, Hershey sold the company for 1 million dollars, which today the equivalent would be 24 million dollars. It was after the selling of this company that Hershey's chocolate really started to become what it is known as now.
In 1903, Hershey began construction on a Pennsylvania chocolate plant in an area that would come to be called Hershey, Pennsylvania. In 1907, Hershey introduced what was to become one of the most recognizable pieces of candy ever created: Hershey's kisses. At first, they were individually hand-wrapped in their trademark tinfoil, but in 1921 machines took over and added the piece of paper ribbon that indicated it was a true piece of Hershey's chocolate.
Although Milton Hershey died in 1945, his legacy still lives on in Hershey, Pennsylvania. If one were to go there, one could get a tour of the factory and other elements, which is called Hershey's Chocolate World. The place also includes a popular theme park called Hersheypark.
Hersheypark was actually opened back in 1907 as a place of leisure for workers at the Hershey factory. Today the park includes a zoo, and over 60 rides and other theme park attractions. All of the subsequent success of this brand means that Hershey's chocolate is not only delicious, it is also the result of one man's hard work and persistence.
