Decorating for a Christmas Party: Finding a Christmas Party Decoration
By Audrey Sneddon
While some thing that the more Christmas decorations there are, the better, there is also a new movement in decorating for the holidays that calls for a more subtle, but in most cases absolutely beautiful result of holiday festive beauty. When looking for a Christmas party decoration, there are basically two main options: exaggeration and understatement. Despite the fact that in the last decade we have all acquired virtually mountains upon mountains of holiday decorations, the current trend is siding for the option ‘less is more' more and more often.
Helpful Hints for Pulling the Christmas Party Decoration off
When going for understated holiday enchantment rather than an all-out Santa Claus's workshop holiday look, the idea is not to put out half of the decorations that you have, but rather to choose subtler ones. You don't want it to look like you pulled out your Christmas party decoration from nowhere and didn't get a chance to put them all out because you were too busy cooking, for instance, but instead, you want it to look like a home with gentle reminders that it's a Christmas party, decorated ever so subtly with a few festive decorations.
If this leaves you unsure, imagine this. Instead of a giant Santa Claus candle in the middle of your serving table, imagine a silver platter with white taper candles arranged within a green wreath with red holly berries or with pine cones. This is the sort of Christmas party decoration that the 21st century is calling for.
Ideally, decorations should be ‘winter themed' with a hint of the more type of the Christmas party decoration that are explicitly Santa and reindeer are no longer faring so well. Take the current rage in decorating with snowmen as an example. It's not that people have forgotten Santa, and it is that the average household is decorating based on a broader theme, a theme that stretches far beyond the colors green and red and far beyond the icons of Santa, reindeer and elves.
As you decorate for your Christmas party try to involve white as much as possible—preferably a shimmering white, for instance. Instead of a green and red table setting, try a white base with a few red accents—or even more breathtaking, a red tablecloth with all white on top. Set with plain white porcelain dishes and plain silverware, crystal glassware and maybe a touch of silver in the serving dishes.
If the lights are fairly dim in your dining room, you will have yourself a beautifully festive Christmas dining atmosphere. Your guests might just forget that it's Christmas, but they won't be able to forget that it's the holiday season.
