Pyramids and Castles and Tigers, Oh My! Las Vegas as a Christmas Vacation Spot
By Charlotte Pennington

Most people think of Las Vegas as the city that never sleeps, however from November until the New Year, Las Vegas tourism is practically comatose. If you want to see Las Vegas at a time when crowds are down and prices are reasonable, pick Vegas as your Christmas vacation spot. Despite its best (and ultimately failed) efforts in the 1990s to come across as a family town, Las Vegas is an adult Mecca. In Vegas you'll find topless dancers, games of chance that tip you from rags to riches and back again in the space of ten seconds, and free alcoholic beverages flowing…well…freely, would seem to make Sin City a less than idea Christmas vacation spot for the rug rats. If you're traveling with small children, show a little consideration for them and pick an alternate Christmas vacation spot.

Others who find themselves in Las Vegas over Christmas have described the atmosphere as gloomy and isolating. That's true only to a certain extent. Las Vegas is pretty much the same city every day of the year. The changes lie in the perceptions of the visitors. People who are completely content to sit in front of a slot machine every other day of the year suddenly feel they should be doing something more profound on Christmas day.

Does It Sound Depressing? Why Should I Go?

People seek Las Vegas on Christmas for several reasons. Some may simply be tired of the same old decorations in their hometown. Perhaps they are grieving a divorce or have lost a loved one and just don't feel like celebrating this year. Still others would rather swap stories with a drinking buddy at a blackjack table than listen to Uncle Ernie recount his gruesome surgeries one more time. Basically, don't go to Las Vegas at Christmas if you're seeking the meaning of life in ten hands of blackjack or less. But if you're an adult looking for a fun, fast-paced, and entertaining time with great food, extremely reasonable prices, and then Sin City might be exactly the Christmas vacation spot for you.

Since Christmas is considered off season in Vegas, you should have your choice of hotel rooms at knock-your-socks-off rates. You may even find airfare is cheaper during this time as well. The casinos never close, so if your favorite Vegas fix is gambling, you're in luck. The clubs stay open as well, as do most of the shows. If you're in to Christmas decorations, many of the hotels such as Caesars Palace, the Bellagio, and the Paris Las Vegas have lovely decorated trees. If you're overcome with the desire for the spiritual, Las Vegas has many churches representing all denominations. Most of them offer some sort of Christmas or Christmas Eve service. Maybe you want to break out of the mundane, try making Las Vegas your Christmas vacation spot for the year. As any of the natives will tell you, it's worth a gamble.
