Holiday Travel: Choosing a Christmas Vacation Theme
By Charlotte Pennington
For many families, traveling over the Christmas holiday has become standard, either because of a desire to create an exciting holiday, see a new place, or in an effort to find a centralized location for family members scattered across the country, or maybe even the world. To make your holiday extra special, consider a Christmas vacation theme. Maybe this Christmas vacation theme will become a new tradition, something you repeat in the coming years, or maybe you want to mix things up and will choose a new theme each year. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Traditional Christmas Vacation Themes
If Christmas has a seasonal appeal to you, and you've been singing along to White Christmas for a few months now, create your won Winter Wonderland setting. Find a nice cabin in the mountains and enjoy the scent of fresh pine trees. Open your gifts by the fireside and watch the frost melt off the windows in the morning with a warm cup of gingerbread flavored coffee. Alternatively, make a week of it and find a cabin or lodge in a ski resort. Here you're guaranteed snow for some great holiday scenery, not to mention some post-holiday fun in the snow. You can't go wrong with snow in choosing your Christmas vacation theme.
Historical Christmas Vacation Themes
Mix education and tradition, and spend your Christmas in the midst of historical treasures. Spend some time wandering through the cobblestone streets Boston or Philadelphia and imagine yourself amid the country's first Christmas celebrators. Take a horse drawn carriage ride through New York's Central Park and then sneak a peek at Rockefeller Plaza.
Other Beach Christmas Vacation Themes
If you want to shake up your Christmas vacation, head to a warmer, sunnier climate. Wake up Christmas morning on the beaches of the Caribbean, toasting Santa with a Mai Tai. Or stay within the continental United States and head to a Southern Florida, or Southern California locale. If you have young children, perhaps you would even enjoy considering a Disney Christmas vacation. If you like the idea of the beach, but can't afford any of the above suggestions, don't rule out a closer beach or lake front for your Christmas vacation theme. Beach houses in the winter months are relatively easy to come by, although you may want to plan ahead as much as possible since the popularity of Christmas travel has really grown. Find a beach house large enough to hold your extended family is much easier, and less expensive, than putting everyone up in a hotel.
