The Cigar Ashtray, Not Just Any Old Ashtray
By M. A. Fulmar
As much as the cigar has been a part of American history, it would stand to reason that the cigar ashtray, followed along as the quiet and unrecognized side kick of the ever popular stogie. Once a symbol of welcome, telling you to make yourself at home, these days the ashtray is a rare item. What use to exist in nearly every home and office building has been rapidly disappearing from view and the ashtray is quickly becoming a collector's item. Yet with the cigar maintaining its place in society as a status symbol, the cigar ashtray will continue to be a necessary, though decorative accessory.
Choices in Cigar Ashtrays
All ashtrays are not created equally so it really wouldn't make sense to use a cigarette ashtray in place of a cigar ashtray. This type of ashtray has a roomier rest made just for the larger proportions of the cigar to keep it from rolling. It will also most likely have a deeper bowl to accommodate the larger pile of ash and saving from having to empty it too frequently.
If you sit and smoke alone to relax or you're just plain anti social you can opt for a smaller cigar ashtray intended for one or two cigars but if you enjoy the camaraderie of friends, a good glass of wine and sharing your favorite smokes, you'd better look into the larger four cigar ashtray. These can sit on a desk or side table and many are elegant and appropriate for any decor. If you don't have room for a cigar ashtray on your desk or other piece of furniture, you might want to consider getting one on a stand. They must meet all the same criteria of the desk top ashtray, with the larger cigar rest and roomier ash bowl. They also must not be so fragile that they will break if accidentally knocked over.
Added Quality
Cigar ashtrays come in a wide variety of materials from fine crystal and silver to ceramic and plastic and even wood. Many cigar ashtrays have some nice added features such as a built in cutter and cigar lighter. There are great durable, high impact plastic cigar ashtrays for the back deck or any other outdoor environment, such as next to the pool. There is even a cigar ashtray for the car that fits into any cup holder and can also be removed and used as a stand alone. Many are break resistant and dishwasher safe, making them a breeze to clean.
Cigar ashtrays range from the most basic, inexpensive utilitarian piece to a David Daum Crystal and sterling silver ashtray recently spotted on eBay with an asking price of $2000. It all depends on your tastes and your budget but as long as the cigar endures the cigar ashtray will hold a popular place right next to it.
