A lot of people all over the world love to hear the chime of a cuckoo clock. Children especially love that cuckoo sound that tells them what time of the day it is. For clock collectors, the cuckoo clock is also one of the favorites. Handcrafted cuckoo clocks are especially very expensive especially when it comes with some elegant designs. According to experts, old cuckoo clocks are one of the most expensive antique clocks nowadays.

During auctions whether online or offline, the old cuckoo clocks are the firsts ones to go. In fact, cuckoo clocks are one of the most sought after items during auctions and the bidding could really go on for sometime before somebody would finally snatch up the coveted price.

Origin of the Cuckoo Timepiece

The cuckoo time piece derived its name from a bird of the same name that is endemic is places like Asia and Africa. This type of bird comes in gray colors with the female having some read feathers on its head that forms like a crown. Originally, the cuckoo clock came from the Black Forest region in Germany.

In the middle of the 17th century, Franz Anton Ketterer came up with the idea of the cuckoo timepiece where he was able to reproduce the sound of the cuckoo bird. The invention of this clock made the Black Forest area very popular at that time as many people clamored to have a cuckoo clock.

From the time the cuckoo clock was introduced by Ketterer to the people in Germany, a lot of people came to visit their place and asked for the clock. Soon, the people in the Black Forest area were making hundreds of cuckoo clock each year.

These clocks were sent to different parts of the world as gifts to royalties, prominent families and ordinary people alike. During the summer, the villagers from the Black Forest area of Germany would peddle the clock on the streets and earn a handsome price for their creation.

Most people would swear that the recent batter powered clocks do not really have the same powerful bellow as the old handmade cuckoo clocks. Although the old cuckoo clock may not really look or sound as good as the present clock, the old cuckoo clock was really one of the best timepieces of all time.
