Your Payroll Depends on Punching those Time Clocks
By Charles Wilkinson
Employee time clocks have been used for over a hundred years. These devices are used in keeping track of employees' attendance, time spent working and time spent having their breaks.
Almost all companies rely on these time clocks to record accurate hours worked by each of their employees per week. Although different kinds of clocks have been developed and manufactures, time clocks remain the system used by companies to create payroll for employees.
Each employee is given a unique card that are used to swipe along the time clock's slot. The time clock then reads their name or employee number and records the time accurately.
Time clocks are usually placed at the employee entrance or near the break area because each employee needs to clock in and clock out every time he or she arrives at the workplace, goes on a break, goes back to work from the break and goes home.
When a week is over, the time clock system automatically tallies and adds each employee's hours worked and prints them out for payroll. This enables a company to process payroll even if they have hundreds of employees to pay.
Today, there are different kinds of time clocks available in the market. However, regardless of designs, features added, or any kind of advancements, the time clock will not change its purpose – to record accurate time every time a card is punched or swiped into its system.
A Glimpse on the Modern Time clock
Time clocks have been used for over a century and have been a reliable device in keeping track of each employee's hours, used particularly for payroll purposes. While time recorders, time-date stamps, punch systems, or electronic time clocks are available in today's market, enhancements are still being make this concept of time-keeping even more easier.
Many companies today have junked their old punch systems and switched to the modern time clock software, which enables their employees to clock in via their own computer station. While these kinds of time clocks work in different work environments, it still holds the same purpose of the punch system – to keep record an employee's start and stop times.
The biggest changes of these new time clock systems are that they eliminated the use of time cards, badges and other swiping materials. In addition, these time clocks provide important information such as overtime, holidays, shifts and pay periods.
Whichever kind of time clock your company use, it still benefits both parties – employee are paid according to how long they spend working, while employers do not waste valuable time by hiring a person to manually record attendances and time data of employees.
