Just Say No to Travel Alarm Clocks

Given the hassle involved with airplane travel these days, don't add to your burden by lugging a travel alarm clock along. Instead of using a standard travel alarm clock, it's entirely possible to substitute one of the many electronic gadgets that you already carry around with you.

Think Smart: Turn on Your PDA

For example, the average person might already have a PDA. There may be variations due to your PDA's model and its operating system, but it's usually a simple process to turn it into a travel alarm clock. Using the Palm TX as a general example, simply tap on your Applications icon and then find the Prefs icon.

Look for the Sounds & Alerts setting. After selecting the icon, you should see a setting for the alarm. Then simply select the sound level you desire. Be aware that the high setting is ear-splittingly loud and is best used by heavy sleepers only.

Now return to Applications and find the World Clock icon. From there, you will see an alarm clock icon in the top right. Just click to the right of the icon and set your wake-up time to whatever you desire, or turn off your alarm as needed. Congratulations, you have just turned your PDA into a travel alarm clock!

Alternatives Part Two

If you prefer having a clock that wakes you up with some soothing music, turn your iPod or MP3 player into a travel alarm clock! All you need is a pair of portable speakers. It should be relatively easy to find compact speakers, especially for the iPod which is highly popular. Whichever music player you have, the procedure is largely the same.

Usually you can find playback settings under your clock settings and input whatever starting time you want. Now you can wake up to a travel alarm clock that plays James Blunt, Jay-Z, My Chemical Romance, or Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries depending on your tastes.

The Sony VGF-AP1L, despite the user-unfriendly name, is remarkably easy to use in this regard. Just two menu selections for example and you're ready to go. Also, if you're on a business trip or on vacation and take your laptop with you, you can also use your computer as a potential alarm clock. Now your carry-on bag or luggage will be just a little bit lighter when you leave your regular travel alarm clock at home.
