The Pros and Cons of Using Glass Cookware
By May Brindle

You are looking for a new cookware set, and you think that you might choose glass cookware this time. Aside from looking decorative, glass cookware has several other benefits. However, you should also be aware of the safety hazards of glass cookware.

Glass Cookware: What You Should Know

This category of cookware can be partially ceramic and partially glass, or entirely on or the other. A common concern about this kind of cookware is whether or not it can be used on to pf a range. The answer is that whether it is transparent or white, yes, it can be used on top of a range.

However, only those items that have handles should be used on top of a range for safety reasons. Items that do not have handle should not be on top of a range because they would have to be held by potholders, and potholders can easily cause a fire if they come into contact with a burner or an open flame.

One of the benefits of glass cookware is that it is easier to clean than metal cookware, but another common concern is how to clean this kind of cookware without damaging it. This kind of cookware should be cleaned with self-polishing cleansers that are non-abrasive. Or, they can be cleaned with mildly-abrasive cleansers that the manufacturer recommends. These, however, should be specially formulated.

When it comes to nylon or plastic scouring pads, they can be used to clean glass cookware, but you should using avoid scouring pads that are metal. If burnt food is sticking to the cookware, remember that this kind of cookware is porous, so soaking it in some hot water will easily wash any stains away.

Of course, the most important concern regarding glass cookware is how it adjusts to temperature changes. Many kinds of glass cookware can withstand thermal shock quite easily and will not break when going from one temperature to the other. However glass bakeware that has been in the oven should not immediately come in contact with water or put in the refrigerator until it has reached room temperature.

Glass cookware can easily be found at local kitchen supply stores or online. The price of glass cookware varies, with the sturdier brands being (understandably) more expensive. When choosing glass cookware, be sure that it is well-made, and can withstand the kind of cooking that you intend to do with it. After all, cookware should not only look nice, it should also be safe.
