So you are tired of wrinkles that signal you are aging but at the same time you harbor concerns about undergoing surgery? Everyone who has ever had cosmetic surgery has felt as you do now. Let's take a look at seven things to consider before you decide to schedule surgery.

Ask yourself first and foremost, if you really need cosmetic surgery at all. We all have appearance flaws but is it really so bad that it needs to be surgically altered? The result of an accident, injury or burn that renders one with a deformity or looks very unsightly is one thing but is your nose really too big, your tummy too large or your lips not plump enough? We all look at beauty differently and what you consider an imperfection someone else may not. Is beauty really in the eyes of the beholder? Corny as it may sound, it certainly is, and everyone's beauty scale is different. Always keep in mind that flaws help add to our character and show that we have lived.

Thirdly, do extensive research before settling on any particular plastic surgeon. Cosmetic surgery is a very serious business and the more information you arm yourself with the better. Talk to people and gather recommendations. When interviewing a prospective physician ask him/her about their education and training and then verify what you have been told by going to the necessary associations to crosscheck the information you have gleaned. All plastic surgeons must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Find out how long the doctor has been practicing, where else he/she worked, and how many surgical operations he/she has performed in his/her career. Avoid unlicensed and devious practitioners who are only out to make a quick buck. It's your body, tread carefully. And remember that the quality of the work should always count for more than how much it costs. It is better to pay more for excellent work than less for shoddy work.

The fourth thing to consider goes hand in hand with the third. Thoroughly scope out the place where your surgery will be done, whether it be a physician's own office, a hospital or a private surgical clinic. In order to be operational the facility must be accredited. Do your homework before making a final decision. Other things you need to find out about are the working hours of the place in question, parking options, if there are fees associated with parking and/or anything else that you feel necessary to know beforehand.

The fifth consideration is what potential risks are involved in the surgery? Doctors take an exhaustive medical history from their patients in order to cut down on the complications that could result from the surgery. Cosmetic surgery is a risky procedure that involves hormones being injected into the body therefore a doctor's opinion and advice is very important.

Are you prepared for both the physical and psychological after effects of having cosmetic surgery? Post surgery sometimes can be every bit as traumatic as pre surgery as a patient deals with the initial physical discomfort and then the change(s) in their appearance. Although the surgery may have been a complete success some people are not prepared for how they will look or feel in regards to their new look.

The seventh consideration is do you know if cosmetic surgery is covered under your insurance policy? Take the time to read your policy from beginning to end to clarify terms before you schedule surgery for yourself. Also make sure you find out ahead of time how much the surgery you want will cost including all applicable taxes.
