Granite Countertop Care Is Easy
By A Sneddon

Granite is a common rock which has been formed by heat and found on the Earth's surface and deep below. The rock can be cut easily cut and, when polished, & sealed, granite has a high sheen surface that is virtually impervious to scratches, heat damage, staining and sun damage or weathering.

Most granite is very, very old and Gneiss, which is very similar to granite, is the oldest rock on the planet. It is very strange to consider that granite is only to be found on our planet. It could be said that it it one of natures miraculous gifts.

Granite has been used as a building material since the time of the pyramids and the most common use today remains as a building material with it's widest use in the creation of quality kitchen countertops. The look and feel of granite has been compared to very expensive materials such as marble but granite is far more affordable and certainly much more hard wearing.

Of the many benefits of using this material in the kitchen I think the one that would be most appreciated by those who work in the preparation of food is that it is really easy to clean (see Granite Counter Top Cleaner). Maintainance is simple and repairs, if ever needed, are easily carried out.

The natural state of it when first polished requires that for use as a work surface it needs to be sealed. This is easily done by simply applying a petroleum based impregnating sealer directly onto the stone, in a similar way to waxing a car. It is so easily done that anyone is capable of doing it. Unfortuantely, if you want to keep the surface in tip, top condition, you should really do this on an annual basis however it is so easy there is nothing to worry yourself about.

A granite counter top is a wise investment. It may, initially, look expensive but when you compare the cost to other materials that may be similar you begin to understand how reasonable it really is. Surprisingly the granite kitchen countertop has a good, well actually it is more than good, even excellent, re-sale value and this should be considered as there are few materials that this could be said of.

Granite is also available in a massive range of colors which range from almost pure white to diverse reds and right down to the darkest of all blacks with everything imaginable inbetween. As I have mentioned in other articles on this site granite countertops are always unique specimens. Of course rocks from the same area will produce a similar looking countertop on closer inspection you will soon see how vastly different each one really is. The random patterns appearing in the granite add to it's appeal but for those of you less adventurous there are stones with a much finer grain which gives the impression of uniformity.

Whatever you decide about this ever popular material I doubt that you will find a more suitable and easy to maintain surface for the kitchen.
