Granite Countertops In The Kitchen
By A Sneddon
Granite has a long history, much longer than our own, but since the formation of early human society it has been used as a decorative finishing material for many great building works. Many of the Egyptian pyramids were once faced with highly polished granite producing, what must have been, a truly dramatic sight.
Today granite remains a highly sought after building material for the likes of flooring in government buildings and other public and commercial buildings that wish to create an expensive look and feel while avoiding the huge costs of marble etc.
Using Granite In The Kitchen
Granite is the perfect material on which to prepare food. It remains cool even under the hottest of conditions. This makes it perfect for use as a pastry table or a surface on which to prepare bread dough. However you can easily have the granite countertop heated slightly by the addition of a system similar to under floor heating that seems to be increasing in popularity at the moment.
As mentioned in previous articles granite countertops are almost indestructible. You will find that even the sharpest of knives fails to scratch it but you should really look after your granite countertop. It is easy to repair but you shouldn't really ever need to do this. Even placing red hot kitchen equipment directly onto the stone fails to damage it in any way, unlike some ot the other materials commonly used in kitchens today.
Designer kitchens may be expensive and beyond the reach of most of us but, if you look closely at them, you will see that they really employ some pretty basic techniques that you can easily emulate yourself if you care to take the time needed. If you have never seen a kitchen with a granite counter top just take a look at the portfolio's of most designers and you are almost guaranteed to see one before turning over the third page!
Even if the kitchen plan calls for a much more expensive material chances are that there is a granite available to match the color and even the texture of the other material - with the added advantages of granite!
Most of the granite used in the USA and in the production of countertops is imported from places such as Brazil & India. Other areas also quarry for granite and Russia, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Finland, & Norway offer some very interesting alternatives.
