Student Credit Cards Help Students Learn Financing

So the kid is heading off to college and you don’t want to be sending a check every couple of weeks to help pay for expenses. Some parents are giving them student credit cards to help them control spending. While maintaining control of the spending limit, parents can also help their student learn the responsibility of spending control.

On the other side, many lending institutions are anxious to begin a working relationship with new college students who have, for the most part, recently reached the age of majority in most states. Since many of them have jobs to help fund their way through school, they are prime targets for student credit cards. Since their first months of college life are filled with unexpected expenses, they are equally susceptible to the lure of credit cards.

The majority of students will be successful in handling financial matters in a responsible manner, making the transition from student credit cards to traditional cards as they advance through their college life. Some may need a little help from their parents to keep it under control but, unfortunately a few will fall into the spending trap and their student credit cards will end up with a collection service.

Takes Responsible Student To Balance Finances

Students with the self-discipline to take control of their finances will only use their student credit cards for necessities or emergencies, understanding they may need that cushion available on their card at some point. They also know that messing up their credit so early in their life will likely harm their credit as an adult.

While student credit cards serve a great purpose for many students, they can also be a disservice by allowing unqualified students access to credit. Since many of the jobs they will hold will be part-time and typically only available for part of the year, allowing them access to credit beyond their means may be considered predatory in nature.

Students and their parents must use extreme caution in allowing them to receive student credit cards and there is no shame in a young adult asking parents for help if they get into a bind. There also is no shame in turning the card back into the company if spending seems to get out of hand. Companies may not like it, but they will like writing off a bad debt on student credit cards even less.
