Crochet Baby Pattern for Practice
By Wendy Simons

Here's a common scenario. You like to crochet and you're ready to try a new type of stitch or yarn or technique but you aren't quite ready to commit to a big project that you might not be able to finish or you might not enjoy enough to try. It isn't that easy to learn a new thing from a book or a computer printout.

What if it's not your fault? Everyone has had the experience of a gorgeous “after” picture accompanied by really bad instructions. Here's the answer. Instead of buying a whole lot of yarn, buy a little. Instead of facing a daunting, huge project, face a little cute project. Instead of learning, say, lace crochet by making a table cloth, make a lacy baby bonnet. Find a crochet baby pattern that uses the technique you want to try and make the little project first.

But, But, But…

You can find a crochet baby pattern on the Internet for free in just about any technique. OK, the ancient craft of crochet isn't always compatible with computer skills. If you are still afraid the Internet will steal your soul or your identity, get your precious irreplaceable child to find it for you.

The baby sized project is small and will go quickly. If it turns out that the technique that looked so good is hard on your hands or tedious or just no fun at all, you haven't made a big investment of time or materials. You can put the unfinished crochet baby pattern aside or finish it and make it a present. Odds are, though, that you will have learned something that you can use for a big, beautiful project that will make you proud.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of free crochet baby pattern sites online. You can find patterns for little sweaters to learn those lacy stitches, or big Aran crochet stitches on a carriage blanket or three-dimensional and shaping techniques on little toys. Booties will help you control your tension.

They are just a few stitches in size but both booties have to match. What if you don't know anyone with a baby? That's the best part. You can find online links through the crochet baby pattern sites that will show you how to donate hand crocheted baby gifts to the needy children. Once you start doing that, you may never move beyond the crochet baby pattern school.

Adorable Crochet for Babies and ToddlersAdorable Crochet for Babies and Toddlers: 22 Projects to Make for Babies from Birth to Two Years (Hardcover)

An excellent book for the beginner and seasoned crochet lover, this book provides 22 useful patterns that are relatively easy to create. A word of warning though - be careful of the measurements which are English rather than American!

While many consider this pattern book difficult for the beginner there really is no excuse not to crack it. Any quality crochet pattern is going to require a little concentration and, what better way to learn, than to be thrown in at the deep end.
