Crohn's Disease Nutrition Should Contain Proteins, Calories, Minerals And Vitamins
By M. A. Fulmar
Crohn's disease may result in reduced appetite as well as weight loss and because of poor assimilation of vitamins and minerals it becomes necessary to keep a healthy diet and Crohn's disease nutrition plays a vital part in managing this disease. Crohn's disease nutrition may involve restricting certain aspects of the patient's diet and for more information regarding what is good food and what is not; the patient may need to consult with his or her gastroenterologist or a nutritionist to help customize the diet so that it caters to the individual's particular needs.
Different For Different People
Crohn's disease nutrition involves taking enough protein, calories, minerals like calcium, zinc and iron, vitamins A, D, C, B-12 and folic acids as well as other nutrients that are needed to stay healthy. Also, Crohn's disease nutrition is different for different people and some may require additional nutrition to compensate the lost calories and others may not require those many nutrients. Thus, one should eat a balanced diet consisting of meats, dairy, cereal and grains as well as fruits and vegetables to complete the best Crohn's disease nutrition regime. One may get helpful recommendations regarding Crohn's disease nutrition from a gastroenterologist or nutritionist who may suggest adding multivitamins or other supplements for the diet that includes calcium which is needed for protection from nutritional deficiencies as well as to complete the patient's diet. Supplements are not meant to act as substitutes for food as they contain no calories and should only be taken after consulting the gastroenterologist and nutritionist.
Crohn's disease may cause the patient to experience difficulties in eating and so the patient should avoid foods to which he or she is allergic to because allergies may cause reactions such as inflammations which may cause the symptoms to worsen. Crohn's disease nutrition could also involve eating small meals through the day instead of eating big meals and one should not inhibit oneself from eating because of fear of pain or diarrhea and one should also remember to eat when hungry and not when one is supposed to eat. Also, Crohn's disease nutrition is not only about eating the proper food but also about having enough liquids in the body to stay well hydrated. Fluids may be lost due to Crohn's disease and when one is a bit under the weather, one may eat and drink less and thus limit the amount of fluids in the body. Crohn's disease nutrition should also include having enough liquids and for this, one may drink, for example, half an ounce of liquid for each pound of body weight.
