Digital Data Storage Faster With Less Space
By Alan Tennant
With the ever-expanded computer age, information storage no longer involves boxes of photographs and pages of data shoved into warehouses. Taking 100 cardboard boxes stuffed with paperwork and placing all the information onto a single compact disk, has made digital data storage a more attractive alternative.
Being able to store several terra-bytes of information on a single tape, smaller than a deck of cards, allows businesses to maintain more information and access its historical information in digital data storage must quicker. In the paper age, information from last week may have taken several days to track down, but in the computer age, it usually can be found in minutes.
Digital photography is also making a case for digital data storage as pictures are already in digital format when they are taken, and keeping them on your computer or on a storage device, protects them from aging and being destroyed. Additionally, pulling a picture from digital data storage is much simpler than finding it in a cardboard box under the bed on in the basement. There is also little chance of them being damaged by weather.
No Question On Stored Quantity
In the past, there were always questions concerning how many copies of a document were needed for storage. With digital data storage that is never a concern as once the file is opened, as many copies as necessary are available to make. When storing in paper format, and you stored two, for instance, you had two available along with a hope they were still in good enough shape to read or to make additional copies if needed.
When documents were placed in a paper file system, it was almost always in alphabetical order. File folders were listed in order and documents within the folders were also in order. If someone put something in the file out of order, it could be near impossible to find. With digital data storage the computer automatically places it in the correct order and searches can also be made based on its content, and not just the title.
Finding a paper file could take from hours to days and even weeks, depending on the age of the document being sought as well as the accuracy of the file system. Items in digital data storage can usually be found in minutes, if not in seconds, viewed and reproduced in far less time and with far less effort than paper files.
