Data Backup Intro: Good Sense
By Alan Tennant

Data backup is, possibly the number 1 most important aspect of modern business. This may seem a bold statement but, to me it is simply a case of good sense! I would much rather be looking for solutions for data backup than finding how I can get my info back and the terrible problems involved with data recovery.

Data backup software is the easiest method of ensuring security of your data. The software is available at a very reasonable price. Actually, have a think about it for a minute and consider a very simple and basic fact; your data is priceless and can not often be replaced so, therefore, how much would you be willing to pay to ensure adequate data backups on a regular basis?

Disaster recovery is a nightmare that we would all like to avoid but it is sadly common to find yourself with a failing computer. Even if your computer is fine, the latest model, if the operator makes a mistake you could lose valuable information. If you have been sensible and backed up all relevant and important data then disaster recovery is simple. If you have used data backup software it is often the case that all you need to do is put a couple of disks into your computer and hit restore!

Online data backup is increasing in popularity. This is due, in part, to the fact that is is so easy to use. Ease of use is very important if you are not very computer literate or you are not too familiar with them. Online data backup services offer hard disk space on their servers for you to store your data. Some of the better services can be semi-automated and all charge only a small amount of cash for their services.

After many years experience in using computers and the great many disasters I have faced I have learnt from bitter experience that you simply can not afford to avoid the question of data backup. I can not tell you how many times I have suffered hard drive failures and lost gigabytes of sensitive data. I learnt at a very early stage that data backup was the most important thing and I bought a zip drive. These drives only held about 90mb of data but, back in those days, that is all I needed.

I was so thrilled when cd recorders became available at a reasonable price. I could now store more data. Today I use multiple methods of data backup, I have everything on two separate hard drives, one is the internal one in the computer and the other is an external USB hard drive to which I copy everything at the end of each month. Every now and again I backup all of my data to DVD's and I even print out important documents and place them in my filing cabinet.

Call me paranoid but I also send copies of my DVD's, after each data backup session, to a friend who stores them for me at his house. I think this is the most sensible approach. Yes you could place your backups in a fireproof safe but if the worst happens they only protect your data for a short time. If you have taken the simple security measure of having backups in another location you have covered for virtually all disasters.

Data protection is extremely important so take a look at your systems today and consider what data backup options are best for you and get started IMMEDIATELY.

It is hoped that the articles below help you understand the process of data backup and how important it is that you do it regularly.
