Being in a relationship can be just as fulfilling as it can be stressful. For many single parents, they are single because they have gone through a divorce or broken up with their significant others without having actually married. Regardless as to why they are single, for those parents who want to start dating again, but may be uncomfortable with the process, it is important to adhere to several single parent dating tips.

Single Parent Dating Tip #1: Forget the Past

Many single parents tend to cling to the more negative experiences that they had with their significant other which led to the divorce or the breakup. While it is understandable, it should not hinder future dating experiences.

An important single parent dating tip is to start over completely new. The parent should find a person who might have some of the positive qualities that attracted the parent to the former significant other in the first place, but other than that, avoid a “type” and try dating someone who is unlike anyone the parent has dated before.

It is often easier for single parents to date other single parents, because both people have their children to think about. However, for those single parents who choose to seriously date someone that is not a parent, they should be very upfront about the fact that they have children, as some people cannot handle the commitment of someone else's children.

Another important single parent dating tip in regards to the children is that they should only be introduced to the new significant other if the relationship is serious. Too many single parents make the mistake of bringing their date home and letting them meet their children, only for the children to come to think of the date as a parental figure and be traumatized when the parent breaks up with the person.

Single Parent Dating Tip #3: Take it Slow

It is important for single parents to not just jump into a relationship with someone they do not know well. Such a relationship can lead to emotional instability on the part of the parent, which can in turn affect their children.

Single parents have just as much right as any other single person to date. However, they do have an obligation to consider the well-being of their children. Thus, single parents will need to find a balance between their personal lives and how it might affect their children. Those single parents that can find a balance are sure to be rewarded with successful dating experiences.
