Dental Care Intro
By A. Kelly

Dental care is a major part of my life, it seems a strange opening statement to make on a site that covers so many subjects but it really is. Please let me explain:

Dental Care is the care of your teeth and gums and I have a severe dissadvantage that I have argued over with my dentist for many years. I suffer from CFS ( Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and one of the symptoms is rotting teeth. I have been aware of the problem for many years and fought strongly to combat the effects of tooth decay. When I first fell ill I honestly believed that it was due to the enormous amount of fillings in my mouth and the leakage of mercury. However it is now clear, to me, that this is not the case. The amount of dentistry work done on my teeth is shocking but I still possess more than one tooth and I am rapidly reaching the age of 50.

I have always had a sweet tooth but, from an early age, I was taught good dental care was important. As I have grown older the sweet tooth remained but now it would appear that I spend more on a toothbrush each month than I do on chocolate. The simple truth is that I destest the idea of having to use dentures! Besides my sweet tooth I also smoke heavily which tends to stain the teeth incredibly so I have tried many different cosmetic teeth whitening products but unfortunatley none were ever permanent.

My dentist, at one point, accused me of using to much tooth whitening product and he explained that some such treatments can actually damage the teeth and make them extremely sensitive. I decided to give them a miss and try to stop smoking - the most sensible approach that most would agree with. When the dentist saw me over the next 12 months he could see clearly that my experimentation with cosmetic dentistry was well and truly over but then he insisted that my tooth decay was due to poor dental care.

I was furious. I have mentioned above how important good dental care is to me and here was my dentist accusing me of poor dental hygeine. Yes my teeth were in poor condition, painful, full of fillings and looking as though I needed more. I explained clearly that I cleaned my teeth often through the day and always after I had food or sweets but he refused to accept my explanations. He went into great detail about the need to brush my teeth properly, use dental floss every day, a complete lecture on the benefits of various types of toothpaste and finished with a complete and thorough exlanation on the process of decay and part played by bacteria (with the complete life cycle of such).

I tried, in vain, to explain to my dentist that dental care is something with which I have strong feelings and that my family all had good dental care habits and they could bear witness to my good oral hygiene but in the end it would appear that his need to preach about dental care was far greater. This is of no great surprise as I live in an area where dental care is a problem, a very severe problem on two fronts:

  • Firstly dental care facilities throughout the UK are near crisis point with a severe lack of qualified dentists.
  • Secondly the area, in which I live, has an historic lack of good personal dental care with, most probably, the highest rates of tooth decay amongst children in the whole country. It is not uncommon for a child to have lost all of their second teeth by the time they have reached the end of their teens.

I have never understood why so many people suffer from bad breath. Surely they realise that it is a sign of something going on there or, at the least, it could, eventually lead to problems with the teeth. Somebody close to them should tell them - quickly!
