Why a Periodic Liver Detox Is Recommended
By Linda Rogers

The liver is the organ which helps in detoxification of our bodies. It acts as the “anti-virus software” for our bodies by catching and eliminating all harmful toxins that happen to enter our system. We are continuously exposed to a number of toxins and the liver is constantly sieving them off. Besides, it also helps in digestion and strengthening of the immune system.

One of the most important roles of liver besides helping the natural detoxification process is preparing and storing glycogen, which can be later broken into glucose when the body needs extra energy.

The Importance of Liver Detox

Today's world is highly polluted and adulterated. The food, the air, and the overall environs everything brings in some or other toxins in the body. All these toxins are broken down by the liver and transformed into water-soluble compounds which are easily disposed through urine and feces and this process is aided by certain hormones. The continuous influx of toxins at times leaves some behind stored in the liver and the body in general. The residual toxins overload the liver in due course and hence slow down its efficiency in eliminating the toxins in the body. When this happens, the body on the whole suffers from a number of ailments.

Some of the most prominent symptoms are constant fatigue, bad digestion because of lowered bile flow, acute headaches due to adding up of toxins in the blood and a high vulnerability to viral fevers and minor infections. It is therefore extremely important to have the liver detox program at least once in two years, so it can flush the toxins off and give the liver a boost to perform at its peak efficiency again.

Fortunately, the liver detox process is not really a difficult job. The most popular way to do this is with a liver flush. This cleansing technique is not only very effective, it is also simple and within the reach of anybody who wants to do it. This type of liver detox involves a diet of water and raw fruits and vegetables only over a fixed period of time. Sometimes, the liver detox can be helped along by using herbal teas and light exercise.

A successful liver detox program can be helped along with yet another great herb, the milk thistle. This particular herb constitutes of a number of antioxidants which prevent liver damage. The milk thistle herb is available in many forms, but is most popularly taken in the form of pills.
