A Healthy Liver Detox Diet
By Linda Rogers
In the human body, the liver serves many vital functions in order to sustain our lives. The most important function of the liver is to purify and detoxify our bloodstream. When the liver becomes overloaded by toxins on a constant basis, the ability to cleanse the blood becomes hindered. In some instances, it completely shuts down, resulting in death. It is very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle including the proper diet, exercise and emotional stability in order for the body to function at its best.
Keys to Implementing a Liver Detox Diet
There is some debate as to the best way of implementing a liver detox diet into your life. Some people ascribe solely to a vegetarian-based diet, claiming that any amount of animal products put a great strain on the liver. Others ascribe to an “everything in moderation” diet, in which portion control is the key factor. There is no doubt that too much of a good thing can be too much for the liver.
For example, consuming a large portion of red meat can cause the liver to work overtime trying to help digest and break down the protein. Therefore, nutritionists recommend a portion no larger than the palm of your hand on your dinner plate. Keeping your meals small can lessen the work of your liver, giving it a greater functioning ability for a longer amount of time.
Another step to the liver detox diet is to drink adequate amounts of water throughout the day. Water helps to cleanse the body of harmful and unwanted toxins, helping the liver to do its job properly. Avoiding processed foods filled with chemicals, preservatives, and refined sugars can lessen the strain put on the liver to rid the body of these toxic materials. Choosing whole foods such as whole grains, fresh or frozen fruits or vegetables, and hormone/antibiotic free animal products can go a long way to achieving health on the liver detox diet.
Benefits of a Liver Detox Diet
It is believed that maintaining a healthy liver detox diet is a key to longevity. Many notice increased energy after making necessary changes in their lives in order to maintain their health. Also, weight loss occurs for many people as a pleasant side-effect to eating healthy and exercising regularly. By far the benefits of a healthy liver detox diet for outweigh the added stress of preparing more home-cooked meals or planning ahead. It is worth the extra effort to enjoy life with a healthy liver.
