Diabetic Food: Eat Well, Stay Well
By M. A. Fulmar
Finding a list of foods to eat that makes up a good diabetic food can be pretty exhausting and is best achieved if one understands which items can safely be categorized as diabetic foods and place them in a simple and limited category, rather than having an unending list that goes on and on. If one considers general foods, the diabetic food would consist of whole grains, beans as well as legumes, plenty of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, eggs and meats, and also fish and shellfish.
General Foods, Processed Foods, Seasonings And Herbs
Vegetables as well as fruits are most suitable as diabetic food particularly, slow digestive fruits and vegetables are ideally suitable and should contain sufficient fiber and one should eat even the peel of the apple as well as combine it with small doses of protein and fats.
For processed foods, whole foods are especially suitable to be used as diabetic food and a healthy eating plan might include frozen entrees, prepared salads as well as canned soups. Soups could be barley, lentil, minestrone and chicken, while prepared salads include egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, as well as bean salad and vegetable toasted salad. Good processed foods that could be considered as being diabetic food include sugar-free gelatin, sugar-free hard candies, sugar-free chocolates and sugar-free gum.
For condiments, one may consider sugar-free jams and jellies, mayonnaise, mustard, salsa, creamer, margarine, butter and vinegar. And, for beverages one could drink mineral water, club soda, diet soft drinks, diet drink mixes, and coffee and tea.
There are also plenty of good seasonings and herbs that make good diabetic food and there is hardly any restriction to amounts as well as types of dried herbs that may be used. These herbs are good and beneficial substitutes to the sugar that may not be present in a recipe and flavored extracts, garlic, hot sauce, horseradish as well as Worcestershire sauce can make effective seasonings that may be used in diabetic food.
It is also possible to create one's own sweet treats by using sweeteners rather than cane sugar that has high carbohydrates. Some recommended sweeteners one can use for diabetic food are Sucralose, Aspartame, Acesulfame K, saccharin, and Stevia. Remember that these sweeteners should be used frugally and for those that have phenylketouuria, they need to avoid aspartame that contains phenylalanine.
You should also remember to limit your calorie intake and it should fall between 1600 calories and 2800 calories, especially when eating a well prepared diabetic food serving. The exact number of servings one eats depends on goals, calorie as well as nutrition needs and the person's lifestyle.
