Have Fun With Easter Baskets
By Audrey Sneddon

Of the secular symbols of the Easter celebration, few are as widely spread as that of the Easter Bunny and of Easter baskets. Most children in the United States have received Easter baskets as a child, usually filled with candy and other goodies, in order to celebrate Easter.

Once the fun of Easter is done, though, it's hard to find a use for these symbols of springtime. If you're stumped as to what to do with your Easter baskets when the holiday is over, here are a few ideas that work nicely for Easter and after as well.

A Flower Display

A florist will be happy to sell you a decorative flower basket, but why let them have all the fun of doing a flower arrangement? With a little practice and some patience, you'll be able to use fresh flowers to create a lovely springtime flower basket for decorating your home with.

The key is to get a bowl or waterproof liner for your Easter baskets that will prevent the basket itself from getting ruined by moisture to keep the flowers alive. If you're feeling particularly creative, try arranging the flowers around a small raised platform made of floral foam and place a dish of Easter candy in the center. You'll have a beautiful springtime display that's appropriate during or after Easter.

Baked Goods

There's very little that's better than fresh baked goods, and using your Easter baskets to serve them is a simple but classy way to do it. Many restaurants already serve baked goods such as muffins or dinner rolls in baskets at the table, so there's no reason why you can't either.

Whether you place the food in the baskets uncovered, or use a clean cloth to cover them so they stay warm, your Easter baskets are perfect for holding baked goods, since they're generally not too large and add a springtime feel to your dinner table. Or, for a country sort of feel, add a checkered tablecloth and use it year-round!

Baskets With Purpose

Some of these ideas for Easter baskets assume that you'll have some wicker baskets that you intend to reuse year after year. And while those are certainly great and add an authentic feel to the Easter holiday, consider an alternative sort of basket to make.

For younger kids, a simple plastic pail and shovel set, available at any dollar store, makes a great compact Easter basket that can be used later in play.

If you have older children in the house, consider using a baseball cap, or other type of hat, as the base of your basket, something that can be worn year round. But whether you're using an alternative basket or you're finding alternative uses for your traditional Easter baskets, the key to getting the most out of your basket is a creative mind and a sense of fun.
