Easter Day Is Perhaps The Most Prominent Festive Day In The Western Calendar
By Audrey Sneddon

Easter is the day when Christians around the world commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it is the most important Christian festival, which is joyously celebrated; albeit the exact Easter day changes from year to year. Easter day is the reference date for other Christian festivals, and on this day churches are filled with flowers and the walls ring out with the sounds of beautiful Easter songs and hymns.

A High Point In Easter Festivities

Easter day is certainly a high point of Easter festivities and is a day when Christians hold parties and give gifts, and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus when he rose from the dead and went to heaven, thus symbolizing eternal life. On Easter day, eggs play a big part of the celebrations since they are symbolic of new life. Also, Easter day falls on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or later than the Vernal Equinox; and this is why Easter day changes from year to year.

Easter day also marks the beginning of 50 days of Easter celebrations that terminates on Pentecost. It is also the day that chocolate eggs are given to children and the eggs can be hollow or filled and are covered in bright silver paper of different colors. In addition, Easter day is also closely associated with special food and is a day much anticipated after the lean winter months and the fasting weeks of Lent.

Some of the traditional Easter day foods include boiled eggs for breakfast, roast lamb, which is the traditional meat on this day, Simnel cake for tea and Easter biscuits, that are eaten on Easter Sunday and which are full of spices, currants as well as grated lemon rind.

Calculating which day is Easter can often be complicated, and the method called Computus is most often used. In fact, in the Western Church, Easter day will not fall on the earliest of 35 possible dates and is not expected to do so until 2285. Also, in the Western Christianity, it marks the end of forty days of Lent that begins on Ash Wednesday, and the week before Easter is especially important to Christian tradition.

Easter day is commercially important and is the time of year that witnesses wide sales of greeting cards as well as confectionary, and is now a very prominent event in the calendar year that does not have any other serious rival festive or commercial day. It is a day when families gather together and children are given Easter bunnies set in Easter baskets, which children find waiting for them first thing in the morning.
