Easter Parade Allows Participants To Show Off Finery
By Audrey Sneddon

Many schools and communities hold an annual Easter parade, allowing children and adults to strut around wearing the traditional new clothes they bought for Easter. In New York City the annual Easter parade focuses more on hats and reminders of the 1948 movie starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland.

While the movie centers on the dancing competition between Garland and a former dance partner of Astaire, it ends with her in a fancy hat and dress, visiting him with flowers and a reminder of their annual date and they participate in the annual New York City Easter parade. Traditionally, parades are held less organized than other celebrations with people making their way down city streets going to or from church services.

Many schools for younger children will have contests for the students to design their own Easter bonnets and have an Easter parade to show off their creations. Some of the creations can be pretty ingenious while others are not. Most will use an older hat from their parents or grandparents and apply colorful decorations to make a hat strictly for the parade.

Many Events Tied To Easter Parade

In some communities, there are additional events and contests that may be tied to the Easter parade, such as egg rolling contests and egg tosses. The egg rolling typically involves rolling colored hard-boiled eggs along a set circuit while egg tosses usually involve using raw eggs to people playing catch with the distance between then growing further on each subsequent throw.

Other area may sponsor an Easter parade, which culminates in a park in which a hunt for Easter eggs is held for the younger children and other events held for older children and adults. The Easter parade is just one of the functions a community my hold to bring the community together for the holiday.

As Easter is often considered a holiday to celebrate new life and new beginnings, many people will sport new clothes for the Easter parade and show off their new outfit for the entire community. Traditionally, boys will put on a new suit and tie and girls will be in white or light color dresses bought specifically for the day.

Today's Easter parade may take different views of the holiday, but more often they focus on the traditional new growth and refreshing nature of spring, following on the heels of the vernal equinox.
