Easter: Which Came First, The Bunny Or The Eggs?
By Audrey Sneddon
Many people are confused about the meaning of Easter. Of course, everyone has to agree that this holiday started out as a religious holiday. Christians believe that Easter is the time when Jesus rose from the dead after being crucified.
However, through the years, this has begun to have nothing to do with the way people celebrate this holiday that comes every year in April.
So, what happened? Where did the way we celebrate Easter come from? To tell the truth this holiday has been one of the most significant holidays for many people all over the world for a long time.
The Meaning Of A Holiday
Holiday, in essence, means Holy Day. It is a celebration that has to do with a religious event. This is the way Easter started. Christians throughout history have celebrated this day with great feasts and joyous gatherings at Church to celebrate the day their savior rose miraculously from the grave.
Then, somewhere along the line, Easter became something else. Easter, instead of celebrating the rising of Christ, has become a time to decorate, hide and search for eggs while a mysterious Easter bunny delivers gifts for all the girls and boys.
For example, ask any child today what the meaning of this April holiday is and there is a great possibility that the words Easter and bunny will be used in that response.
Where did this Easter bunny come from, what does he or she have to do with eggs, what to do bunnies have to do with eggs and why are we so obsessed with decorating them and hiding them? These are all questions that have to be answered by a historian. The point is, this holiday is what you make it.
Family And Friends
There are many who take advantage of this day to get together with family and friends. It is a time of laughing and of catching up with the people who know you and love you the most.
That is what any Holy Day should comprise of, no matter the object of celebration. Every holiday should be about the love and support of family and friends and we should all be lucky that they comes around at least once a year.
Of course, you can celebrate Easter any way you want, according to your beliefs, but, as long as you include those closest to you, you will be certain to have a great Easter holiday.
