Broken Fire Alarm A Recipe For Disaster
By Arthur Sneddon

Since your life and that of your loved ones may depend on your alarm system, there are no excuses to allow a broken fire alarm to exist. Depending on which component of the system is malfunctioning the cost for repairs will vary, but most likely, that expense will be considerably less than the loss of property or a life in the event of a fire without quick notification.

If you have a fire alarm system installed it should be tested frequently, monthly is advised by most, to insure it is working properly. If it is not, there are a few things you can check that may help get it working. First, in a broken fire alarm if any components require batteries, change them. It will probably take less time to change them than to pull them out and test them and they should be replaced twice a year anyhow. A basic rule of thumb would be to replace the batteries when the time change occurs.

Next, you can check the wiring connections at the control panel on a broken fire alarm to insure none of the wires have come loose. There may be times when something has bumped wiring causing it to pull loose from connections and a simple visual inspection can verify they are still connected. The same is true for the connections of the heat or smoke detectors installed throughout the system.

Professional May Be Needed For Repairs

If the broken fire alarm is installed in a commercial building, it will be necessary to have it repaired promptly to avoid ant potential liability for injury or other damages in the event of a fire. When getting a broken fire alarm fixed in a hurry it may be better to cal a professional service to effect the repairs in a timely manner. There are some locations, which will also require the notification of the local fire department that the system is not working, and again when it is back in operation.

It is also possible that a broken fire alarm continues to transmit alarms and in many areas, repeated false alarms prompt a charge for the dispatch of fire fighting equipment. If this activates a local alarm as well, it can be very disruptive to your business and annoying to your employees as well as any customers in the building. In any event, as a matter of safety it is always best to have your broken fire alarm repaired as soon as possible.
