Bass Fishing for Beginners
By Angus MacLeod

Bass fishing is known to be one of the most popular sports in the U.S., Australia, Canada and increasingly so in other countries. Many great tournaments are held each year which allow hundreds of participants to proudly display their freshly caught bass. Bass is an edible fish but most people who participate in bass fishing do not treat it as food, instead they prefer to return it back into the water. Of course theu measure and weigh award-winning catch firstly - this is commonly referred to as catch-and-release fishing.

The real secret to a successful career in fishing bass is in the choice of equipment used. The type equipment used by a fly-fishing angler are vastly different from the equipment used for bass fishing. It is therefore very important to understand which items you need most for your first bass fishing kit.

Bass fishing involves the use of a plethora of lures and techniques. For a beginner, this makes the choosing of the right equipment all the more difficult and it can be a very confusing task. This is possibly why a great many novices collect hundreds of rods, lures and reels whci are, ultimately, inappropriate for fishing bass. To avoid wasting a large amount of money you should first investigate your options to make an informed decision. You should always test your fishing gear before purchase (many stores now offer facilities for this).

Your First Bass Fishing Kit Contents

Starting out in the hobby of bass fishing means that you will need to buy reels and lots of other tackle. Due to the massive variety of lures available, you may need to purchase a variety of rods to match. The most important thing to remember is that you don't need to buy all rods at once, especially when you're just starting to master your skills.

The two rods that are most suitable for beginners that are planning to fish in clear waters, are – a 6' medium-action, spinning rod and a 6'6” heavy-action, flipping rod. With only these two rods on hand it is possible for you to master the different soft-plastic techniques. They are also suitably versatile for you to go on to learning new techniques but for far more advanced techniques you will need to purchase other rods.

Choosing artificial lures can be difficult, there is no need to appear as an expert angler with dozens of different lures on display at one time. It is far better that you should stick to the basics keeping your selection to a minimum. Having plenty of lures can only confuse the issue of choosing the appropriate bait for the task in hand.

There are basically four categories of lures for use in bass fishing – soft plastics, jig and pig, spinner baits or crank baits and top waters. Each type of lure has a mass of different colors, various sizes and very many designs and appearances all in an attempt to match any kind of weather or water condition.

Once you have decided upon your tackle and lure, you can now concentrate on mastering your bass fishing skills and maybe even enter a competition as soon as you feel sufficiently confident. You'll never know unless you try - you might just be the states next bass fishing champion in waiting.
