Bass fishing has a fascinating and ancient history. It started towards the end of the 18th century and continues to adapt, change and grow to this day.

It is more than likely that it was originally practiced in the search for food among the people of the south of the United States. Since then, it has continually gained numerous new audiences of all ages and nations. Today, such countries as Australia, Cuba, South Africa, most of Europe & the United States, participate in this kind of sport/hobby.

Bass Fishing Timelines

• Around the year 1770 was the birth of the sport of bass fishing. Onesimus Ustonson first introduced his early multiplying reels to the fishing gurus of the day. This reel was later developed into what we know as the bait caster.

• 1897 William Shakespeare Jr. materializes the production of a level wind device and secured its patent.

• The William J. Jamison Co introduced the Shannon Twin Spinner in 1915. Although many consider it overly ornamented it was continually improved leading to today's popular spinner baits.

• In 1932, the creation of Tennessee Valley Authority instituted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who encouraged the creation and building of numerous dams. These dams later proved most useful to those culturing different varieties of bass fishes.

• 1937, the DuPont Company filed patent for a type of nylon fishing net, this was later developed into the nylon monofilament fishing line used today.

• 1992, the year that many consider the most glorious in the history of bass fishing. Possibly the most famous fisherman in the history of bass fishing, Larry Nixon, made $1million in total earnings in the sport during this year.

There are several fish species caught at bass fishing events including the following:

The Kentucky Bass (Micropterus punctatus)
The Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides {Lacepede})
The Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieui)

There are other species of Micropterus caught but the one which remains most popular is the Largemouth bass. It should be emphasized that the Australian Bass is different from the North American Bass variants mentioned above but share similar features.

The 1950's saw an increase in the success of Bass Fishing. The popularity of the game during this decade created the springboard which led to the development of modern fishing equipment, ranging from bass boats, rods, lines and lures to the various fishing gear we see today using modern electronics. It was during this time that the use of electronic gear first became possible, bass fishers used the latest technology as they do today. Newly created r eels of different types, offered functions such as hauling and hoisting.

The bass fishing industry contributes around $50 to $70 Billion to the US economy each year and this figure continues to grow. Statistics continually show that the sport is increasing in popularity with growing audiences and with more and more people are getting interested in it compared to tennis and golf.

Even though fish are cold blooded it is known that they can suffer a sensation similar to pain. They can also suffer from stress so the angler should take great care when releasing them from their hooks. Many anglers now use barbless hooks and practice catch-and-release.
