Excellent Fishing Rods for that Perfect Fishing Experience
By Angus MacLeod

Today's fishing rods have incorporated many modern features that are simply not seen in the primitive cane pole first used by fishermen. Modern fishing rods have reels, which greatly aid in the retrieval of fish that have taken the bait.

A moderately sophisticated piece of fishing gear is the spinning rod. The best feature of this type of rod is that the entire shaft of the rod, excluding the handle, can move freely on its axis which allows greatly increased flexibility when struggling with a fish caught on your snare bait.

Similar to the classic cane fishing rods, the modern fishing rod is thick at the handle (bottom) and is more tapered and much thinner towards the tip. The basic design allows for a greater stability in handling and a more flexible movements while the shaft remains strong by utilizing modern materials such as carbon fibre.

Types of Popular Fishing Rods

The fishing rod typically measures between 6 and 16 feet (2 and 5 m) and vary greatly in their capability to take the strain of fishing activity. When choosing the length of a rod you need to ensure that it is capable of withstanding the force exerted on the pole by your chosen fish. High performance rods are available for various types of angling.

The Cane Pole

Cane poles are one of the simplest gadgets used in fishing today. They are usually made from bamboo or some other type of flexible wood to which a basic fly line is attached and on the end of the line a fly or other type of bait.

Unlike the more sophisticated modern fishing rods, cane poles usually do not have the benefit of a reel so retrieving fish caught on bait can be difficult. Although this style of fishing is vastly different from other types of angling it remains a very popular sport.

The Spinning Rod

Spinning rods are considered the best fishing rods available today and have been the most popular for a number of years. They have proven their worth over the years and are regularly used to catch trout, walleye and bass fish. They can easily handle lightweight fish but are also a capable rod for the heavyweight. Their measurements range from 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2.5 m).

Spinning rods are commonly used in bass fishing competitions due to their flexibility and ability to tolerate the stresses of competition angling. They can be used with fine lines but can easily accommodate bigger and tougher fly lines. A good quality reel is required to avoid line tangles that commonly occur during the uncoiling of float lines.

The Jigging Rod

The jigging rod is considered the best when using heavy lures and baits, especially when deep sea fishing when the line is likely to go 180 to 200 feet below the ocean's surface. The rods are made from fine, solid materials which adds greatly to their heaviness. When experiencing alternating currents while fishing the jigging rod will soon prove to be your most important piece of equipment.

Some waters are known to have strong and erratic undersea currents. It is therefore important to keep bait and fly lines in place to attract the fish. Lures are often disturbed to such a degree that they cause confusion among fish. It is therefore crucially important that your line is long and heavy enough to withstand the added stresses of sea fishing.

These rods are best for target fishes which are usually found swimming around the bottom of the sea. Such species include the halibut and cod and are great sport fish.

Interesting Fish Facts & Fishing Tips
A fish uses it's scales as a store for essential minerals such as calcium. When the fish is unable to obtain these from it's diet these minerals can be absorbed back into the body.
