Boat fishing Safety 101
By Angus MacLeod
Boat fishing is one of those hobbies that appeal more to men and to all age groups. It is, possibly, one of the most relaxing sports available to man. However there are dangers the most obvious of which is that it could lead to drowning, accidents and even fatalities. It may be hard to believe it but thousands of people drown each year while out boat fishing. So you can never be too careful as you will never know when or if fate will decide to give you a life-threatening situation.
Most alarmingly nearly all the accidents that happen onboard fishing boats occur due to people drinking alcohol to excess. Most people seem to think that they are able to handle driving a boat while under the influence however this is rarely the case. There have been too many accidents that have occurred due to the stupidity of drinking too much alcohol while on a fishing. Most accidents are the result of people falling overboard and, because their body's reduced capability to handle the cold and the effects of shock which are worsened by the presence of alcohol, they find themselves unable to swim.
Whenever you are onboard you must, at all times, follow the basic safety tips of boat fishing, doing this should ensure that you enjoy your day fishing to the max.
Some Basic Safety Precautions For Use When Boat Fishing
Everyone knows that the wearing a lifejacket is THE most important thing when out in a boat but you will be surprised at how few people actually follow this most basic rule! All fishing boats have personal floatation devices onboard, such as a lifejacket or a simple buoyancy ring. If you have a lifejacket then don't just have it in your boat make sure that you wear them at all times, even when not on deck. This is really, really important because the donning of a lifejacket is just as easy as putting on a seatbelt and can just as easily save your life. It is relatively easy to buy inflatable lifejackets that inflate upon contact with the water. They are available in different styles and colors so you should really make sure that it is part of your "fishing uniform" rather than an ornament looking pretty on deck.
As mentioned earlier the consumption of alcohol while on a boat fishing is not advisable. Each and every year about 40% of related deaths are directly connected to the drinking of alcohol. Alcohol can greatly intensify the effects of the boat motion together with those of the sun, wind and also can result in fatigue. These effects impair your judgment, balance and it can vastly reduce your reaction speeds during an intense situation.
If you have a boat fishing trip planned, you should make sure that you check the weather forecast and fishing reports. Creating your own safety checklist is a great idea and well worth doing. There are many important things to consider, you should check for any local hazards and waterway conditions. Safety equipment should be purchased such as first aid kits and the all important lifejackets mentioned earlier.
Remember to tell somebody that you can trust all the details of your boat fishing trip and give him/her your days schedule and also let them know when to expect you back home.
If you do not have the time to attend a safety course then, at the very least, try to follow these simple safety tips. Consider taking the time to learn the basics of self-rescue, basic first aid and some rescue techniques but most of all you should learn about prevention strategies. By doing all of this should ensure that all your boat fishing trips run smoothly without delays or accidents thus avoiding potential deaths.
