Fishing Tackle In The UK
By Angus MacLeod

The British Isles is a fisherman’s paradise. There are so many types of fishing available that a very wide variety of UK oriented fishing tackle is required to service the needs of the anglers. In the canals and the fens of the Midlands and East Anglia on a given stretch of water you will see a variety of UK inspired fishing tackle. From the fifteen foot rod with a quiver tip designed for sensitivity in bottom fishing, to the short eight foot long spinning ensemble, the variety of fishing rods may surprise the uninitiated. As you move offshore and begin to fish in the North Sea, yet another set of unique UK fishing tackle is required. Although much of this type of fishing is done commercially, thousands of pounds of cod are still caught each year with the rod and reel.

Unique UK Fishing Tackle

Much of the fishing tackle used in England is unique to the UK fishing tackle industry. Perhaps the most widely known piece of tackle is the fishing creel. This is a basket that used to be made of woven reeds and bamboo. In the US this is just called a large wicker basket. The basket is typically made in such a way that the largest person can sit on it in comfort. Not only that, but your basket contains all of your fishing stuff and has a shoulder strap so that you can carry it all on your back.

Another rather unique piece of UK inspired fishing tackle is the rod bag. This is not unlike a golf bag, but the rod bag contains your fishing rods, rod rests, fishing umbrella and has a slot for your keep-net. These latter two pieces of UK fishing tackle are also unique to the UK. The fishing umbrella is designed to fit high over your basket and has an angled rod that is pushed into the ground. As it rains often in England, anglers must find a way to ignore that weather element. The fishing umbrella provides a measure of comfort in the rain. When properly positioned the fishing umbrella can actually provide the angler a very comfortable environment.

The final piece of UK inspired fishing tackle that is seen frequently in the UK, and now also in Europe, is the keep-net. Most freshwater fisheries in the UK and Europe permit only a very small variety of fish to be taken for food, with the vast majority of the catch returned back to the waters. The keep-net is the name given to the net that the fish are kept in before releasing back to the water they were taken from. Most UK fishing tackle shops have a variety of keep-nets that can be as long as twelve or fifteen feet.

All in all, UK particular fishing tackle is often novel and interesting and is now in use throughout the world.
