The First Purchase of a Great Fishing Tackle Box
By Angus MacLeod

Most fisherman recall with strong emotions the first tackle they purchased. As they reminisce they always seem to include some animated comments regarding the great fishing tackle box that they bought and just how little it cost them. And, also typically, the discussion rambles on and boasts of just how much stuff it could contain. Their great fishing tackle box contained absolutely everything they needed. As with all memories the story does not recollect the perspective that they had at that time.

Fishing Tackle For The Beginner

Most children begin fishing because a parent or best friend is willing to spend the time to purchase them some tackle, and take them to the lake, river or pier and go out on the boat to go fishing and learn some basics. The great fishing tackle box is one of the first items that must be purchased. For the beginner this great fishing tackle box should be able to hold securely some floats or bobbers, hooks, weights and perhaps a pair of pliers and a small knife. For the beginner, their first great tackle box does not need to contain spare reels and line. At this point the beginner needs to keep things simple as they develop an understanding of the art of fishing or, as Isaac Walton called it, angling.

Fishing tackle boxes at this stage are declared great for the primary reason that they may be one of the first things the child has ever owned. The kid’s first great fishing tackle box may only have cost five dollars and may be plastic, but it belongs to the kid. This tackle box will take on enormous proportions by the time the child is relaying this story to their own children. The great fishing tackle box will have been capable of walking on water beside its owner by the time the story is told to the grandchildren.

Advanced Fishing Tackle

There are other great fishing tackle boxes. These are most often the property of the professional angler and can be very elaborate. However, the criteria to move this normally inanimate object to the status of a great fishing tackle box for a professional angler are not so different than that of the beginner. The great fishing tackle box is born when it provides the angler with the access to the material they want in a most expeditious manner, and then, the angler wins a competition as a result. It is always the case that the inanimate object becomes a personal friend when it provides its owner with advantage. The great fishing tackle box is no different.

To reach this status the great fishing tackle box must be quite large. For the professional it may be multi-tier, have smart release systems for the lures and hooks so they do nor fall out, and may in certain circumstances hold knives and other instruments required to prepare the bait for use.
