Salmon Fishing Tackle Changes With Circumstances

Many will claim that salmon is one of the better tasting fish that can be caught with a rod and reel and the type of salmon fishing tackle used varies by location and preference of the angler. The one thing most agree on, however is that when they start their spawning run a different bait may be needed to match their aggressive hunger. Different sizes similar lures can also be successful in the spring and fall or in salt water or fresh water lakes and rivers.

For example, in large bodies of water like the ocean or the Great Lakes, spoons can be very attractive to salmon but when they begin their move into river, switching to spinners or large plugs can be devastating as salmon fishing tackle. Additionally, while in the big waters, larger schools are very aggressive on feeding on bait fish and there is finally something anchovies are good for besides being picked off pizza and that is as bait for hungry salmon.

While preferred colors of lures differ with each person using them, a common thread is that the brighter they are the more attractive they seem to be, based on the success anglers have with the rainbow of a selection. Salmon fishing tackle will usually contain a variety of sizes of spoons, plugs and spinners, along with divers and flashers to get the attention of the fish.

Bait Presentation Varies By Location

When choosing the salmon fishing tackle used, how it is presented will depend on where it is being used. For example, when trolling through open waters in the ocean or in large lakes, herring and anchovies are the bait fish of choice and if they imitate any spoons that have been successful in salmon fishing, they will be more successful as live bait. In locations where a fresh water river flows into the ocean, spinners are considered to improve the chances of landing salmon, but baited spinners have also been proven to work well.

There is also limited success fishing with salmon fishing tackle adapted for fly fishing, and although salmon tend to seek out bait fish, catching one on a dry fly can be an exhilarating experience, fighting with a 30-pound fish on fly fishing line rated at only five pounds or less.

The use of bright multi-color spoons and spinners as well as natural-looking plugs have proven a successful part of salmon fishing tackle and with similar colors in different lures of different sizes, salmon can be taken from many different locations.
